Can we do Tharpanam daily? ›

There are many spiritual debts that each one of us needs to pay every day. One of these is our daily debt to our ancestral beings known as pitrus. To pay off this debt, what we need to do daily is the worship procedure known as pitru tharpanam.

Tharpanam (Tarpan)

The three important requirements for 'Tharpanam' are Darbhai*,water and seasame seeds (Ellu or Thil). ' Darbhai'(the holy grass) is considered as equal in purity to Agni and water. 'Devas', the divinities reside on the tip of Darbhai, the 'Manushyas' (Humans) and the 'Pitrus' (manes) on the base.

How many "Tharpanam" (thithi) does one have to do for ancestors in a year ? There are 96 Punyakala days in a year to do Tarpanam. Sometimes two tarpana punyakala may come on the same day, therefore tarpana should be performed twice on those days with only variation being in the sankalpa.

Those who do not perform Shannavathi but SankramaNam, AmavAsyA, MahAlayapaksham – perform only one on the day of Amavasya or SankramaNam/MahAlayapaksham – for example – if Shannavathi (Vyatheepaadham) falls on AmAvAsya day – those doing Shannavathi will do 2 TharpaNam, whereas others will do only ONE THARPANAM.

Tharpanam is the ritual of making offering to ancestors on amavassai days.

One with living parents also can perform pitri tarpanas for departed ancestors of this life and previous lives. Even if one's father does the same, one's own debts to ancestors are different from one's father's and one needs to work on those debts.

Some people believe that one cannot offer Tarpanas if one's father is alive. This is wrong. Suppose one is closer to one's grandfather, than one's father is. One may have a stronger connection of genes and/or mental conditioning to one's grandfather, than one's father does.

This is offered at the first annual shraddha (death anniversary) and during subsequent annual shraddhas, amavasyas (new moon days), sankramanas (solar ingresses), eclipses, and during visits to selected holy places of pilgrimage.
